The Chapter Where Scarlet Loses It

from Lament For Lady Stella(Book Soundtrack) by Adora

lyrics

Inside Scarlet's brain, a thousand wasps were squirming their ways through the veins in her brain. All she could hear around her was the buzzing of them as they crawled in and out of her ears. They traveled down Scarlet's brain stem to the rest of her body and she could feel them crawling under her skin as they struggled to find a way out. She watched the ambulance take Vivica away and it was like she was in purgatory.

The night before, after Vivica died, Scarlet brought Vivica's body outside and laid it in front of the building. Then she called an ambulance, claiming she found the body lying there. After she went inside and snorted one of the lines.

A darkness had surrounded Scarlet and she feared it was Vivica's spirit. It told her Vivica died because she hated her so much. She tore her hair with scissors and unevenly cut it shorter. Then she went from room to room making sure the doors were locked. Libby wasn't able to reach her as Scarlet's mind seemed to be going into overdrive. She watched somebody die, was fired and had just tried meth for the first time despite it killing Vivica. Through ever equation she could muster, through any sense of intelligence she had, Scarlet tried to find a way that Vivica dying wasn't her fault.

Libby kept her and her kids in the spare room with Vega as everyone in the apartment waited for this sudden meltdown to end. Neither Libby or Vega knew something was even the matter. To Vega, it was genuinely scary. Scarlet was walking around like a zombie, unlocking and locking the doors then shaking the knob, then repeat. It reminded Vega of OCD, which was something Scarlet clearly didn't have. Suddenly having your mind broken like this wasn't healthy. It was also reminding her of Cassie.

Libby however, kept the room calm with her calm singing. She didn't seem to mind that Scarlet was going through something so horrible. The babies in the room weren't crying, luckily. "Scarlet will burn herself out, eventually," Libby assured Vega with a smile. Vega made a face, "That's what I'm worried about. I blame the weed." Vega grumbled.

Libby giggled, "She's experiencing a solar flare." Vega chuckled with her, "More like her stars collapsing." They both laughed, but it quickly died down. Vega looked to the bookbag she had with her since she came. She decided to take out her notebook and do some homework.

"What are you writing?" Libby asked.

"Oh, I'm writing an essay about Astronomy. Piper's recent poem got me thinking, is there really a difference between a sun and a star? It's widely accepted that the suns a star, there's nothing special about it, so why does it get to have a different name?"

Libby nodded her head, hanging onto every word. Vega turned her notebook over to show Libby the small amount of progress she had made. "Want to hear it so far?" Vega asked, "You can give me notes." Libby started to glow as she loved seeing Vega read her assignments and work. She didn't really understand a lot of what Vega says but she always enjoyed seeing how happy she gets when talking about her passions.

Back when they all went to school together, the Star Darlings went through great effort to humiliate Libby on the fact she has passions. Libby convinced herself they didn't know the real damage this past event caused. There was a reason she would send pictures of her babies but not their names or any more information. She didn't want their names put into a song and be used as an example or a byproduct of Libby loving something.

Vega cleared her throat and Libby got comfortable.

"The sun, a star, a ball of gas, are just some of the many names given to the big glowing celestial body in the sky. It is what we see when we wake up in the morning and it's the last thing we see before a gradual darkness comes. When there is doubt in the world, we can always count on the sun to arrive. The sun gives us light, warmth and for some sorrow, as if you're exposed to it too long it has lasting and painful effects on you. When you look at the sun, it blinds you, yet we need it to see. The worlds revolve around her and exist for and because of her. She stands in the sky as a grim reminder, for avoiding looking right at her, we forget that the sun will one day go out, will one day collapse or explode and we will all die with her."

"It's very...poetic?". Libby kept smiling, though on the inside she was a little unsettled. The doorknob rattled, then the two heard the key go in and turn, then Scarlet entered the room. "Guys pack," Scarlet said in a shaky voice, "We're going to see Piper."

"What!?" Vega asked while abruptly standing up.

"Roadtrip! Yay!" Libby cried with a burst of glowing light gushing from her.

"Why?!" Vega asked

"I need to know if Vivica is mad at me, Piper didn't text us about Vivica dying and I think it's because Vivica's ghost is haunting me because I keep seeing this shadow in the corner of my eye." Scarlet stumbled over her words as she tried to explain her thought process, "Then if Piper didn't know that Vivica died last night, then why didn't she text about it? Vivica's demon is going to haunt me, I need to find out."

"...What in the fuck are you saying?" Vega asked. Libby gave Vega a scowl for swearing in front of her children but understood the need. Libby couldn't make heads or tails about what Scarlet was saying. "Scarlet... is this something you really need to do?" Libby asked. Scarlet tried her best to nod.

"Roadtrip! Yay!" Libby cried with a burst of glowing light gushing from her.
